It’s OK to harness your inner designer, but it’s important you remember to keep it in check before you self-sabotage your own home’s sale.
Would you wear sweatpants and sandals to the most important job interview of your life? I’m going to assume you’re a person who cares about their future, so the answer is a big fat “no.” The same should hold for selling a home; you should prepare your home in a metaphorical custom-tailored three-piece suit to ensure a great first impression. An unkempt yard or peeling paint will scare some potential buyers before they even step foot in the house. To give your home the best possible chance at a smooth sale, it’d be a good idea to avoid these common aesthetic mistakes that may sabotage your home sale.
- Overlooking the outside aesthetic
One of the biggest mistakes that homeowners can make is preparing the inside of their home and completely ignore the outside. Even though people have been told for decades to not judge a book by its cover, people do it. And they’ll do it to your home! So be sure that your lawn is kept, paint is looking fresh, and the windows are clear of any dust and other debris.
- The unaesthetic appeal of clutter
It’s one thing to have baseball bats, and soccer and footballs all around the yard during a normal summer day, but all that mess around is abhorrent in the eyes of the potential buyer. Shoes by the front door, tangled hoses, and kids’ toys should be tidied before people start arriving.
- Sometimes, it goes beyond aesthetics
If your fridge and stove are aesthetic, but they were around when we last saw Tony Soprano cut to black abruptly, they may be outdated. Having fresh fixtures is like a light bulb turning on in a buyer’s head saying, “This place looks new and I want it.”
Aesthetics is a beautiful word, and your home should reflect on it as much as possible. It will make the sale of your home a lot easier.
