Yet when it comes to property tax bills, it might seem like homeowners don’t mind paying too much… because they have no idea they’re overpaying for these taxes! As a Texan (and a rational thinking human), you want to pay as little as you can for your property. Do you know if you qualify for property tax exemptions? Check out these exemptions to keep more of your hard-earned money in your pocket.
Property Tax Exemptions for Texas
- Homeowners who meet Social Security disability guidelines can receive a $10,000 property value exemption from the school taxes that would otherwise be due. Keep in mind:
- Property value exemption is effective on January 1 of the tax year regardless of the date the person qualifies and will not increase unless the homeowner makes improvements.
- There is also reduction of school tax ceilings on residence homesteads for individuals who are elderly or suffer from a disability.
- Cities, counties, or junior college districts or their voters can adopt a tax limitation for homeowners with disabilities who meet Social Security disability guidelines.
- Homeowners who meet Social Security disability guidelines may postpone paying current or delinquent taxes for as long as they own and live in the property (this requires a filing of affidavit). Once the property is no longer owned by the person with a disability, the taxes and interest are due immediately. Penalties on late taxes are reduced to 6 percent.
- Veterans with disabilities may qualify for property tax exemption (for a home or other property) ranging from $5,000 to $12,000, depending on the severity of their disability.
